Nederland Dans Theater
The Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) was founded in 1959 by Benjamin Harkavi, Aart Verstegen and Carel Birnie. From the early days, they had set ambition and singularity in the modern dance domain as the center of expression. Hans van Manen joined as a choreographer in 1961, and its avant-garde element brought the company an international reputation. In 1975, Jiří Kylián became artistic director. The company that achieved great growth in the 80’s and 90’s was recognized as one of the world’s leading ballet companies. Kylián was also a pioneer in focusing on talent development within the company, giving young professionals from within as well as outside the organization a chance to becomes dancers and choreographers of international repute. Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, both the house choreographers of NDT since 2002, are the primary examples of this.
NDT is one of the most productive dance companies in the Netherlands, if not in the world. With eight world premieres in season 2018/2019, NDT shows an unprecedented number of new ballets.
